almost four years. how the presidential candidates are reacting. mornings on 2 begins right now. good morning, welcome to mornings on 2, i'm dave clark. >> i'm torey campbell. it's friday, october 5th. talk about a busy weekend. more than a million people are expected to pack the streets of san francisco because there is a ton of events going on. tara moriarty begins the coverage in san francisco to let us know what the city is doing to make sure things go as smoothly as possible. >> reporter: we are at the america's cup official store. if you look here to your right, you can see one northbound lane there, will be shutdown this weekend between the ferry building and bay street to allow emergency vehicles access to the hub of all of the activities.

around 6:30 this morning, a military convey, led by police came through in preparation for fleet week. today is also the quarter finals for americas cup with races scheduled this weekend. estimated to draw 40,000 people to the bay. evmember of the police force will be out. leaders say it's a practice run for the big america's cup event next year, 3 million people are expected to attend. the blue angels will be flying over head, practicing today. catch a quick peek practicing this afternoon and shows saturday and sunday. it's part of fleet week. here is a look at the big events we talked about earlier , the giants taking on the reds in the national league playoffs and the hardly strictly blue grass festival in golden gate park. niners taking on the buffalo

ridership. a live report on the records that could be broken this weekend. with a new jobless rate, it said the u.s. economy generated only 114,000 new jobs in september, however the unemployment rate went down. the jobless rate is 7-point 8%, it's down 3/10th from august, the lowest rate since january 2009. labor department revised upward the job creation numbers for july and august and a separate report shows 873,000 people found new jobs last month. we will bring you more on the jobless numbers when we get our report from the washington dc newsroom at 7:15. drive by shooting overnight in san jose injuries one man. it happened on roberts avenue around 11:00. authorities say the man was shot in the nose, and the hand. his injuries are not considered

life threatening. two bart passengers were robbed at gun point as they got a train in oakland. it happened at the colosseum part station parking lot. they were walking two cars when two gunmen demanded money. the suspects took off with their cell phones, bart officers used police dogs to attract the suspects to a warehouse area. one of the suspects may have been bit and was taken to the hospital, the robbery victims were not hurt. time is 70:00 5, new information about a san jose principal accused of not reporting allegations of sexual abuse by a teacher. the evergreen school district showing notes saying a second grade teacher saying a teacher blindfolded her and put something in her mouth. the principal should have reported that to the police and to child protective services. that teacher allegedly molested another student three months later and was arrested. this morning, learning the

identities of the two men killed in a double shooting in vellejo, authorities say douglas collie and michael schoolly were could after a dispute with a neighbor. the shooting suspect and the victims were good friends but often argued over politics. they say the accused shooter carried a gun in his sweat pants and had made threats in the past. >> martin has threatened to shoot them before, getting angry about politics. it happened after the presidential debate started. police have not confirmed whether an argument over politics led to the shooting. time 7:06, morgan hill woman accused of abandoning her 10-year-old daughter during a shoplifting attempt is in jail in santa clara county. she used the name marcy key lynn. she aban dodd her daughter

regular unleaded, according to aaa, fuel gauge report. the cost of gas in california increased dramatically this weeks but a problem unique to the state. california is dealing with suplay challenges. the fire at the chevron in richmond caused lower production and a fire in la recently. california's gasoline inventories are at the lowest levels in ten years. people we spoke to had they own opinions. >> they give us the wantings, we heard about it. who knows, i don't know, what is the reason for it? bottom line is my i'm not making more money but paying more in gas, continuesly. particularly in california. it's really bad. >> reporter: take a look at what is happening in san jose. a week ago regular unleaded costs $4.16 a gallon. yesterday $4.38 a gallon. today the average climbed up to

60s and 70s. a big surprise from the labor department. the new report says, the unemployment rate has fallen to its lowest level in 4 years. allison burns with those numbers and the political impact. >> reporter: it's the lowest unemployment rate since president obama took office. the labor departments report for september shows the economy added 114,000 jobs last month. the unemployment rate drops significantly to 7-point 8%, from 8.1% in august, that is a surprise because economists were expecting unemployment to pick up. president obama and mitt romney will both be campaigning in virginia this morning, the obama campaign took a hit with his debate performance this weeks this will give him something to crow about today. the romney campaign, mitt romney issued a statement saying this is not what a real recovery looks like. he goes on the say, the real

unemployment rate is closer to 11% if you count the people who stopped looking for work. there is also a lot of speculation on line on social media this morning, that the obama administration could be fudging the numbers. we took that question right to the secretary of labor this morning. she tells us it's ludicrous to say the numbers could be manipulated. secret service has new policies in place after one of the most embarrassing scandals in the history. it would ban excessive drinking and the share of work related information on sites including facebook. this comes five months after more than a dozen employees of the secret service were accused of drunken partying with prostitutes. american activists are planning to stage a protest against u.s. drone strikes,

investigators say they noticed a disturbing trend, drug traffickers, some connections with mexican cartels representing houses and convert -- renting houses and converting the houses in to major meth labs. >> i was sitting in my recliner, it almost knocked me out of the chair. i thought a trug or car hit my house. >> one man inside the meth lab house suffered third degree burns and is in critical condition. two other people escaped. police are looking for them now. a former follower of charles manson could be closer to gaining freedom. the california parole recommended parole for bruce davis. the entire parole board must approve his release and governor brown could block it. bruce davis is serving a life sentence for the deaths of a musician and a stunt man in 1969. he maintains he was a bystander and did not participate this

the killings. actress darryl hannah, known for her role in splash and blade runner has been arrested in northeast texas. the actress and former texas landowner, elinore fairchild were taken in to custody for a protest against the keystone excel oil pipeline. hannah is accused of laying down in front of construction equipment to block it's movement. she faces charges of criminal trespassing, and resisting arrest. mail theft is investigated on the peninsula this morning. sometime between wednesday afternoon and thursday morning, thieves broke in to several mailboxs, that skyline in woodside. the victims are worried someone will steal their identities. the sheriff's office is investigating. three people are due back in court today for alleged jewelry scams, the target, elderly chinese women. look at the surveillance video of an incident in san francisco. police say the scammers told

the victims to put their jewelry inside a bag to ward off evil spirits then escaped with the jewelry. the hearing for the women charge second expected to wrap up today. each of the women has been charged with 7 felonies. it is 7:20, a professional parachute assistant fined. laverne everett went sky diving for her 80th birthday but nearly slipped out of the harness. she did manage to land safely. faa is fining parachutist mc glenn $2200 for improperly fitting the harness and improperly leading the aircraft. major money problems for a city in the central valley. at water layed off almost 40 city employees to help close a $3 million budget gap. many of those who received the slips took the grievances to

san francisco's bracing for big crowds this weekend. more than a million people expected to fill the streets, and the city leaders couldn't be happier. several high profile events including the americas cup world series will be happening. they are hoping this will show what is to come for the big americas cup event next year when they expect 3 million people for that. as you can imagine, it will be a lot of extra police on patrol as well. the events this weekend range from fleet week to the hardly strictly blue grass festival, baseball and all kinds of things going on, to avoid gridlock, you are advised ride public transportation. alex is in oakland to tell us how public transportation is gearing up for this very busy weekend. >> reporter: good morning, it will be all hands on deck for bart in particular. they will bring in station agents and train operators for this very busy weekend.

this morning, as well, bart will be adding extra cars to all of the trains. over the weekend, bart will put every available train car they have in to service, 600 of them, they will have special event trains, a dozen, it will be time to coinside with the time when large events let out in san francisco. keep in mind, trains will be still operating on the normal weekend schedule so they won't be coming more frequently than they would on a weekend. a spokesman said bart could set a record this weekend for ridership with events around the bay area, and of course bart riders are bracing for the big crowds. >> definitely planning ahead. i've had experiences with you get stuck on bart or don't make it or get there and there are so many people, you are trying to walk in. you are like i'm going to say here. >> we could have 250,000 people on saturday, 200,000 on sunday. which would be a very big

events. go to the front page there, look for the section called today's hot topics. disturbing story in the peninsula, the san mateo county sheriff's office is looking for a man who exposed himself to a 12 yield girl in san carlos , the girl was walking home from central middle school when a man allegedly drove up to he and exposed himself. the student immediately turned around and walked back to the school, and reported the incident. an alert has been sent to people living in san carlos. a woman is in custody after leading sheriff's deputies on a wild chase through the east bay. she ran several red lights on east 14th street. when she not to the end of the street, she turned around and went the other way and stopped at 61st avenue. the chase lasted nearly half an hour. time is 7:34, the expanded

search now for people who may have been exposed to rabies by a bay area man who died of it. claudine wong live in martinez where officials are about to hold a news conference. >> reporter: the cdc released this report on its investigation and as you said in just a few hours, health officials in contracosta will hold a press conference to talk about the first rabies related death in two decades. they are trying to track down information, the victim and everyone he may have been in contact with. this man got ipfect bid a bat in the southern part of the county in march. an acquaintance saw him tough a touch a bat and he pulled his hand back as if he had gotten bitten. it appears that's the best evidence of how he got this.

this man was well traveled. he died on july 31st, he was in switzerland when it happened and had several treatments. cdc identified 59 people who came in contact with him and could have been exposed after the onset of symptoms. 23 of them have been given rabies shots. reasonable risk for contact means coming in to contact with the tears or saliva with open wounds. they believe this man was likely at risk of exposing other people from june 11th, until july 31st. health officials getting the word out about who might have been in contact with him. rabies obviously very deadly and once the symptoms start, almost always it is fatal. six more birds have tested positive for the west nile vice

russ in contracosta county. the recent heat wave maybe to blame. brentwood, concord, discovery bay, two residents tested positive. it's been detected in 56 dead birds, 19 groups of mosquitos and 7 chickens. a chicago firefighter meanwhile is the latest victim of the west nile virus, he was bitten by a mosquito during a family trip to wisconsin two weeks ago. he first reported flu like symptoms and went in to a coma and suffered irreversible brain damage. he worked for the chicago fire department since 1989. patients in 23 states are warned steroid injections they received for back pain, may have been contaminated with fungal meningitis. the health department confirms the steroid medications were shipped to medical facilities

plus yearses of course they are more than entitled to be concerned about the neighborhood. >> he has been growing the part as part of a medical marijuana collective and once had 30 plants but now only has ten. it is 7:39, one man is dead, and a woman is treated for serious injuries after a crash involving a motorcycle in sanoma county. it happened on arnold drive near sanoma. a nissan altima hit a motorcycle head on. a map driving the motorcycle died at the scene. the female passenger was air lifted to a hospital in critical condition. the cause of the crash is under investigation. fur flying american airlines you may want to check the status of your flight. the airline is cancelling dozens of flights to fix the seats that have been coming loose in the air. american says 44 flights are canceled today. 50 flights were canceled yesterday. all planes should be back in

service tomorrow. so far, we have called the airline and found two american flights ow of ffo this morning, one heading to miami , the other to orlando, were canceled. that's what we know so far. it's slow but no major problems. a lot of slow traffic, northbound, 280, not as bad as yesterday. it hasn't been a great commute in to the valley. 101 is slow. looking at it here on the maps, you can see that traffic is slow near 280, yesterday, it was so bad, today if you get out again, you are going to say it's improve ad lib. if you are looking at the commute, highway 580, interstate 580, liver moor, better than it was. bay bridge toll plaza, traffic is backed up. it is backed up to the foot of the mc arthur maze.
